Europe (France) size: 5 ft/1.5 m long Hyrachyus was generally very similar to Heptodon (see pp. 258-261), but a little larger and more heavily built. It was a common and widespread animal. Many species are known, ranging from the size of a modern tapir to that of a fox.
Hyrachus appears to be ancestral to both the later tapirs and the rhinoceroses. Indeed, its resemblance to a primitive form of the latter group is so .pronounced that it is often classed as rhinoceros, albeit a lightweight one.
